It is reported that artificial intelligence company OpenAI has won a one-year contract worth $200 million from the US Department of Defense to pilot the application of AI in administrative management and national security tasks. This is the first major cooperation project reached by OpenAI's newly established "OpenAI for Government" department, marking the official implementation of its expansion into the public sector.
It is reported that the contract covers multiple scenarios such as military medical services, network defense system optimization, and task scheduling automation, aiming to evaluate the actual effect of artificial intelligence in improving government efficiency and enhancing key security capabilities. The pilot project will be launched in the next few weeks and will be gradually tested in multiple federal agencies.
As part of OpenAI's public service strategy, the "OpenAI for Government" department also integrates its cooperation resources with institutions such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and is committed to providing customized AI solutions for the government. The department focuses on the controllable deployment of AI in key areas such as scientific research, medical care, national defense, and emergency response.
An OpenAI spokesperson said that the company will ensure that all government-related AI deployments comply with strict security, privacy, and ethical standards, and emphasized that the cooperation does not involve AI weaponization. The Ministry of Defense has not yet released specific details of the project, but said it is an important step in exploring emerging technologies to improve national defense effectiveness.
