OpenAI announces its first European AI data center project, Stargate Norway, to deploy 100,000 GPUs within the next year.

OpenAI today announced that it will build the Stargate Norway data center project in Norway, alongside partners Nscale and Aker. This is OpenAI's first AI data center project in Europe and the second stop for OpenAI for Countries' non-US sovereign AI facility, following its launch in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Compared to the 1GW Stargate UAE, the Stargate Norway data center is relatively small: its initial power capacity is 230MW, with plans to add an additional 290MW. The project aims to deliver 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026, with further expansion planned. Stargate Norway will be located in Narvik, within the Arctic Circle, a region rich in hydropower resources, a cool climate, and a mature industrial base.

The data center will be powered entirely by renewable energy and utilize highly efficient closed-loop DLC liquid cooling technology, with waste heat used to support low-carbon businesses in the region. OpenAI stated that millions of people across Europe use ChatGPT and its API every day.

In Norway alone, ChatGPT's monthly active users have quadrupled over the past year, with thousands of local developers. Stargate Norway will promote the widespread adoption of AI computing resources in Norway and across Europe.
