How many bitcoins are there in total?

According to the latest data, as of June 5, 2024, the number of Bitcoins in circulation is 19,727,800 (Bitcoin's maximum supply is capped at 21 million).

In other words, there are still 1,272,200 Bitcoins that have yet to be mined. It takes about 10 minutes to mine a Bitcoin block (miners are rewarded 3.125 BTC). Currently, about 900 new Bitcoins enter circulation every day, but this number will decrease since the recent Bitcoin halving.

These halving events are hard-coded into Bitcoin's blockchain (after every 210,000 blocks are added to the blockchain, or about every four years). They reduce the number of Bitcoins rewarded to miners by 50% — a measure to prevent inflation. With future mining, experts predict that the last Bitcoin will be mined in 2140.

Note that it is estimated that about 20% of the Bitcoins in circulation have been lost due to the following reasons: for example, users forget the keys to their Bitcoin hardware wallets, or the owners die without sharing the keys.
