Tether builds its own Swiss vault with gold reserves of $8 billion

Tether Holdings SA, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT, is accelerating the expansion of its gold asset layout. The company revealed that it has set up its own vault in Switzerland, storing about $8 billion and nearly 80 tons of gold reserves. This figure not only highlights the scale of Tether's physical asset allocation outside of digital assets, but also makes it one of the world's largest non-state, non-bank gold holders.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said in an interview that the company has completely managed this batch of gold assets independently and emphasized the security of its vault: "We have our own vault. I believe it is one of the safest vaults in the world." However, for confidentiality and security reasons, Tether refused to disclose the specific location and construction time of the vault, only confirming that it is located in Switzerland.

This disclosure highlights that Tether is increasing its allocation of traditional safe-haven assets in addition to the stablecoin asset support system. Tether has previously launched the stablecoin Tether Gold (XAUT) anchored by gold, and gradually expanded its physical gold reserves to support its products and financial security. As the uncertainty of the global macro environment increases, Tether is trying to enhance the risk resistance of its balance sheet through physical assets.

In recent years, Tether has continuously improved the transparency and structural diversity of its assets, and continued to strengthen its coordination with auditing and compliance supervision. The company said that gold reserves will be part of its long-term strategy and there is still room for further expansion in the future.
