Beijing time, November 20th, Bloomberg reported, citing an internal memo, that Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist and often referred to as the "godfather of AI," recently announced to employees that he will be leaving Meta at the end of the year to start a new artificial intelligence company.
It is reported that LeCun disclosed this decision to his Meta colleagues in a memo on Wednesday. Sources familiar with the matter said that Meta plans to collaborate with his new company, and the specific details are still under negotiation.
LeCun explicitly stated in the memo that Meta will be a partner of the new company and will have the right to use its research results.
LeCun's new company is dedicated to developing his proposed "Advanced Machine Intelligence" (AMI). This technology uses visual and other sensory information as training data, aiming to enable AI systems to make predictions about the physical world.
"The mission of this startup is to drive the next major transformation in the field of AI: building systems that can understand the physical world, possess persistent memory, have reasoning abilities, and can plan complex sequences of actions," LeCun wrote in the memo.
He emphasized that this project will continue the research direction he has been pursuing with his team at Meta and New York University (where he still holds a teaching position).
LeCun further explained: "This technology will have widespread applications in many economic sectors, some of which overlap with Meta's business, but many of which are unrelated. Pursuing the goal of advanced machine intelligence through an independent entity is an effective way to maximize its broad impact."
A Meta spokesperson has confirmed LeCun's upcoming departure. As of press time, LeCun himself has not commented on the matter.
