Disney and OpenAI reach strategic partnership and content licensing agreement

According to Xinhua News Agency, The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI announced on the 11th a three-year cooperation agreement covering content licensing, equity investment, and other areas. According to the agreement published on Disney's official website, Disney will become the first major content licensing partner for Sora, OpenAI's generative AI video platform. Sora users can create, share, and interact with short videos using over 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters within the licensed scope. The agreement explicitly excludes the licensing of any real actors' likenesses or voices to respect relevant rights and legal regulations. Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and receive warrants to purchase additional shares in the future. Both parties also emphasized their shared commitment to the responsible use of artificial intelligence, including protecting user safety, safeguarding creators' rights, and preventing the generation of harmful content. Disney will also leverage OpenAI's AI technology to drive new product development for its streaming platform Disney+ and integrate tools such as ChatGPT into employee work and creative processes internally to improve operational and innovation capabilities.
